Burlesque, the art of the tease, is commonly associated with giant feather fans and bedazzled bras, though its origins are in literature and theater as a form of satire. The world “burlesque” itself derives from “burla,” a Spanish word meaning joke or mockery. While the heart of this performance is sensual and sexy, it’s also about making light of serious matters and treating frivolous things with great gravity.
Since it’s creation in the 19th century, burlesque has grown and changed shape- and it almost disappeared for awhile!- but has experienced a great re-emergence in recent years. It’s now possible to see everything from neo-classical acts of corseted beauties dripping in rhinestones to hilarious nerdy cosplay and even grungy, political performances. What is guaranteed is an entertaining, engaging show!
